Last Wednesday, a meeting was held in Tremp (Pallars Jussà) for partners, collaborating organizations, and local stakeholders of the Wild Pre-Pyrenees project — a conservation initiative focused on ecological restoration and landscape resilience in the western Catalan Pre-Pyrenees. The project is coordinated by the Pau Costa Foundation and funded by the Endangered Landscapes Programme, which supports restoration initiatives in landscapes of high ecological value.
The event served to present the final results of the planning phase, a key step that leads to the search for funding to implement the proposed measures in the region.
A joint effort for viable solutions
Throughout its course, the Wild Pre-Pyrenees project has analyzed the feasibility of restoring key ecological processes—such as sustainable fire regimes, the functionality of herbivory, and hydrological dynamics—with the ultimate goal of increasing landscape resilience to climate change and promoting economies based on the regeneration of natural capital (such as bioconstruction, among others).

To carry out this work, the project has relied on a multidisciplinary technical team made up of professionals, management bodies, and organizations specialized in nature conservation, such as:Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera, Fundació Miranda, Fundació Pau Costa, Aubèrria, Green Wolf Nature, CERM-UVic, ReNatura Pirineus, Ramats de Foc, Buseu Project, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Forest 4, GRAF (Bombers de la Generalitat de Catalunya) and Reserva Nacional de Caça de Boumort.

This team has worked based on scientific and technical knowledge, but also with strong ties to the territory, keeping in mind the reality and needs of local communities. The goal has been to develop concrete and viable proposals for action, capable of generating a positive impact both ecologically and socioeconomically.
Rosa Galindo, representative of the Fundació Miranda and project partner, highlighted the project’s collaborative approach:
“Wild Pre-Pyrenees is a project that has brought together many organizations across a vast territory (from the Segre to the Noguera Pallaresa) with a clear goal of preserving the land. We have worked together to achieve these results and to implement viable solutions..“
Among the various options analyzed by experts, the project has chosen to focus on three priority lines of action due to their viability and transformative potential: fire management through prescribed burns and managed wildfires; the promotion of herbivory; and hydrological dynamics.
Awareness and outreach to connect territory and society
Another key highlight of the event was the presentation of the eight educational videos produced as part of the project. These videos aim to raise awareness of the ecological restoration initiatives carried out in the study area and to explain their purpose to the general public.
In addition, they aim to raise public awareness about the importance of restoring ecosystems as a key tool to address climate change and build a more resilient landscape.
The project will also use the videos produced as a key resource for planned environmental education activities, such as participatory events, training sessions for professionals, and interpretive tours.
