It is undeniable that Spain is facing a complex problem that is getting worse every day with climate change. Large wildfires occupy the front pages of the news, serve as content to feed social networks, and civil society demands solutions. It has been proven that simple solutions, based on beliefs and myths, with biased discourses that sometimes leave science and experience aside, are no longer useful. As a society, we have the responsibility to decide how to deal with a situation that is getting worse year after year and that, according to all forecasts, will tend to get worse.
For this reason, over six months, more than 60 experts from the forest fire community, coordinated by the Pau Costa Foundation, worked to identify the urgent needs and commitments that must be made to deal with large forest fires. To conclude, they met in Madrid in March 2023 for two intense days, at the Forum for debate and proposals for action for the management of large wildfires in Spain. The conclusions of this work were collected in the “Declaration on the management of large wildfires in Spain” and have been publicly presented to different autonomous communities.
This time we are presenting the Declaration publicly in Extremadura, within the framework of the MosaiCultura 2025 Conference: Social Innovation against Depopulation (March 28-30) funded by the Provincial Council of Cáceres. See the agenda for these conferences here.
