The meeting was held from November 20-21 in&nbsp;<strong>Cardiff<\/strong>.&nbsp;The core theme of the conference was in relation with&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>fuel management.&nbsp;<\/strong>As described by Simon Thorpe, EWWF, understanding how to better manage fuels is key to reduce the wildfire risk before it is too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/paucostafoundation.digitalnature.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Photo-20-11-2019-10-21-27-e1575474943439-1200x727-1-768x465-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/paucostafoundation.digitalnature.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Photo-20-11-2019-10-21-27-e1575474943439-1200x727-1-768x465-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4288\" width=\"280\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.paucostafoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Photo-20-11-2019-10-21-27-e1575474943439-1200x727-1-768x465-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.paucostafoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Photo-20-11-2019-10-21-27-e1575474943439-1200x727-1-768x465-1-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.paucostafoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Photo-20-11-2019-10-21-27-e1575474943439-1200x727-1-768x465-1-600x363.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Marc Castellnou,&nbsp;<\/strong><em>chief wildfire officer at the Catalan Fire Service and President of the Pau Costa Foundation Advisory Board,&nbsp;<\/em>set the scene for wildfire challenges in the UK and Atlantic Europe for the upcoming years:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Large fires are likely to affect the region and the&nbsp;<em>lessons learned<\/em>&nbsp;in fire prone regions indicate that the effectiveness of&nbsp;<strong>traditional fuel management<\/strong>&nbsp;in reducing wildfire behaviour is becoming less compared to the effect that fuel management had on wildfires 10 years ago.<\/li><li><strong>Climate change<\/strong>&nbsp;is one of the key reasons why wildfires are becoming a raising threat for Atlantic Europe.&nbsp;The energy being released during a wildfire is not only in the fuels but also in the atmosphere.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The latter was also confirmed by<strong>&nbsp;Matthew Perry,&nbsp;<\/strong><em>senior applied scientist at the Met Office,<\/em><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>that evidenced the<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>increase of&nbsp;<strong>wildfire risk<\/strong>&nbsp;in the near future.&nbsp; In particular, the&nbsp;<strong>UK<\/strong>&nbsp;is expecting warmer and wetter winters and hotter and drier summers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ron Steffens,&nbsp;<\/strong><em>Faculty at Prescott College and Incident Commander and Fire Analyst in Grand Teton National Park<\/em>, reaffirmed the focus has to move from the&nbsp;<strong>wildfire to the fuel<\/strong>, \u201cfuels are everything, fuels are where we live\u201d, he sentenced. The way we manage our environment is key to address wildfire challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Why is fire smart not happening?&nbsp;<\/em><strong>Alex Held (<\/strong><em>Senior expert from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sure.efi.int\/\">EFI Resilience Program<\/a><\/em>) questioned&nbsp;the audience.&nbsp;<strong>Held<\/strong>&nbsp;highlighted the great amount of fire knowledge that is available in Europe and&nbsp; beyond,&nbsp;to carry out&nbsp;<strong>smart landscape management.<\/strong>&nbsp; However, this type of management is not enough or even inexistent in many regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>key to success is to reach public opinion<\/strong>&nbsp;but for that, the&nbsp;<strong>fire community needs to invest in communication campaigns,&nbsp;<\/strong>added<strong>&nbsp;Held.<\/strong>&nbsp;Partnerships with social sciences and communicators are needed to reach the target, suggested the Senior expert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wildfire management in Portugal was also presented by&nbsp;<strong>Carlos Trindade,&nbsp;<\/strong><em>coordinator of the Municipal Civil Protection and Director of the municipal Heliport.<\/em> He and his team carried out&nbsp;best practices in Mafra,&nbsp;<strong>Portugal<\/strong>. A fire prone area that has been impacted by wildfires several times. Trindade\u2019s team has successfully engaged stakeholder and landowners&nbsp;<strong>to be an active part of landscape management using prescribed fire.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally,&nbsp;<strong>Claire Belcher<\/strong>&nbsp;(<em>Director of the University of Exeter wildFIRE Lab<\/em>) launched a call for&nbsp;<strong>science-management collaboration<\/strong>&nbsp;to collect data during wildfires and prescribed burns. Joining forces would help gain understanding of fire behaviour and improve in fire managent&nbsp;health in a much faster way than science or&nbsp;fire&nbsp;&nbsp;management&nbsp;working separetly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other 18 participants and a number of posters presented several solutions that are being studied and implemented in the UK and around the world, most of them based on&nbsp;<strong>fuel management to reduce the wildfire risk.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After two days of fruitful knowledge-sharing in the <strong>EWWF Conference<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/sure.efi.int\/Riskfacility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">SURE Workshop<\/a> took place led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/sure.efi.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">European Forest Institute.<\/a> This workshop was dedicated to pro-active fire management.
