coming to an end with the aim of restoring extensive livestock farming in the Pre-Pyrenees as a tool to combat rural depopulation and adapt to climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout its implementation, the project has promoted ecopastoral management, the rehabilitation of infrastructure, and the creation of grazing areas based on ecosystem criteria, helping to reduce wildfire risk, conserve biodiversity, and maintain mosaic landscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Led by the La Sabina Association, together with the Forest Science and Technology Centre of Catalonia (CTFC), the Pau Costa Foundation, and the City Council of \u00c0ger, PREPAST has had a budget of \u20ac1.12 million, mainly funded by the European Union\u2019s NextGenerationEU fund through the Fundaci\u00f3n Biodiversidad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paucostafoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1000056472-1024x768.jpg\"><img class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Project impact<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>PREPAST has generated a significant impact both on the territory and on the local community:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Land management and wildfire risk reduction: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creation of grazing areas managed using ecosystem-based criteria, combined with mechanical forestry work and prescribed burns to facilitate herd access.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Biodiversity conservation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintenance of open, diverse landscapes that support natural habitats.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Recovery of livestock heritage: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inventory of more than 400 traditional corrals and enclosures, with 17 infrastructure rehabilitation actions, including water points.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Regenerative tourism: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activities connecting citizens and livestock farmers, such as outreach videos and the first \u00c0ger Livestock Fair.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Enhancing livestock viability: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Added value to livestock products under the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramats de Foc<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> label and financial compensation for the ecosystem services provided by extensive livestock farming.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Creation of grazing networks: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promotion of extensive grazing and strengthening of territorial governance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Raising awareness of extensive livestock farming<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the project\u2019s standout actions has been the production of outreach videos, developed by the Pau Costa Foundation, which showcase the work of livestock farmers and technical staff throughout the project.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These videos explain how ecosystem-based grazing helps manage wildfire risk, conserve biodiversity, and keep rural areas alive.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They can be viewed on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLg9vWkdCUr2mYHHGrLPIMb6o-DwDdi6lJ\">Pau Costa Foundation\u2019s YouTube channel <\/a><\/strong> and represent a key tool for raising public awareness of the importance of the ecopastoral model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Tools and governance for the future of extensive livestock farming<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The PREPAST project has produced a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/prepast.org\/actuacions\/manual-estrategia-gestio-ecopastoral\/\">strategic ecopastoral management manual<\/a><\/strong> that compiles the good practices developed during the project and provides recommendations on grazing areas, herd management, and the maintenance of mosaic landscapes, with the aim of reducing wildfire risk and conserving biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, a <a href=\"https:\/\/prepast.org\/actuacions\/governanca-futur\/\"><strong>participatory governance model<\/strong><\/a> has been promoted, culminating in an agreement to coordinate efforts and foster extensive livestock farming and sustainable landscape management. This agreement has been joined by 18 entities, professionals, companies, and public administrations. These tools and agreements ensure the replicability of the actions and the continuity of ecopastoral management in the Montsec area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Conclusions<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>PREPAST demonstrates that extensive livestock farming is an essential tool for sustainable land management, with benefits that go far beyond food production:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Extensive livestock farming helps combat depopulation <\/strong>and improves landscape management and conservation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Collaboration among local stakeholders <\/strong>is key to adapting actions to the specific needs of the territory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Social visibility <\/strong>acknowledges and dignifies an activity that is often overlooked.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Collective agreements <\/strong>ensure the continuity of the project beyond its initial funding period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The project has shown that livestock farming based on ecosystem criteria is not only crucial for reducing wildfire risk and maintaining mosaic landscapes, but also for strengthening social cohesion, making the work of livestock farmers more visible, and generating economic opportunities linked to tourism and local products.
