How can wildfire protection be improved under climate change conditions in the Barcelona metropolitan area?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To address this question, a workshop was held at the Collserola Library (Vallvidrera, Barcelona) last Thursday, on October 23rd. Organised jointly by the Pau Costa Foundation and Mitiga, this event, the second organised within the framework of the Barcelona Living Lab for the European project CARMINE, brought together representatives from different sectors in the field of wildfire management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the previous workshop, we identified risks and their drivers, and we discussed fire risk mitigation measures under climate change scenarios, as well as the barriers to implementation. Now, in this workshop, we worked on imagining what we would like the different sectors (identified as emergency management, sustainable land management, and social awareness) to look like in 2050 and see what changes need to be implemented to achieve this vision,\u201d explains Guillem Canaleta, the Carmine project leader for the Pau Costa Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop dynamics were structured around the creation of three working groups, into which participants were divided to define sectoral objectives. After a joint effort to capture the key events that have shaped risk management over the past decades and review the conclusions of the first workshop, each group identified the key changes over the past 25 years that have led to the current situation, agreed on the basic principles that should guide wildfire risk management, and identified the desired scenario for 2050 for each sector.\u00a0 Mitiga will run an additional session to present the Digital Twin for Wildfire Adaptation Planning\u00a0and collect stakeholder feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe feedback we gather from the different working groups provides us with direct insights into the information that is most relevant for the final users,\u201d comments Dr Eleftheria Exarchou, Senior Climate Scientist at Mitiga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Digital Twin is designed to assess the risk of wildfires under changing climate conditions, and how they are impacted by intensifying heatwaves and droughts, for the near to the mid and lon term future The scope for the DT-Wildfire is to provide a granular understanding of climate risks under different greenhouse gas emission scenarios, as well as the risks for scenarios where risk management solutions are implemented in Collserola (e.g., Nature Based Solutions, forestry & rural development etc). Ultimately, the Digital Twin aims to make the Barcelona Metropolitan Area more fire-resilient by helping authorities and society design participatory risk-reduction measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day also included a visit to a strategic management area in Collserola, where mechanical work is underway, as an example of the forestry interventions in the Collserola Natural Park. This visit was led by Mar Mateo, from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food of the Catalan Government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are planning a third workshop in 2026, in which we will incorporate the results from the two previous workshops to identify lines of work and strategies to be implemented to improve wildfire risk management,” concludes Guillem Canaleta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
