Interview with Sergi Fontesca, PCF Member
In the scarce four months that Sergi has been in the Foundation he has already been able to participate as a listener in the "Day of investigation of the causes and prevention of forest fires", which was held last April in Madrid. Sergi Fontseca He is a Rural Agent of Catalonia and occupies the rank of Agent Major within the Fire Prevention and Research specialization, as well as being a volunteer firefighter in Tordera Park, an occupation that has allowed him to learn more about the Foundation.
Sergi Fontseca with an anemometer Why do you think it is important that the Pau Costa Foundation exists?
Because if you want to change things, it is necessary to do it by private means and with maximum public participation. Own public administration bureaucracy blocks and slows down changes. The Foundation is looking forward to share knowledge, in a spirit of integration and advance in it. If an entity such as the PCF did not exist, it would be impossible for things to work within the forest fire community.
"The PCF is an open and transparent platform, where the members that integrate it can compare the results that they raise"
What do you think is the mission of the Foundation?
Transmit the message that the fires are evolving by climate change experienced by the planet and the rural exodus, mainly. The Foundation has the mission to spread knowledge about fires and fire, in particular.
The PCF also cooperate and transmit knowledge of the actors that work in the territory day by day. Is a open and transparent platform, where the members that integrate it we can contrast the results that they raise.
The Foundation has many channels to spread its message depending on the public to whom it is addressed. What channels would you highlight?
The actions they carry out through MeFiTu seem very important to me. It is relevant that children know from a young age that fire is inherent and teach them to differentiate between fire and fire. In addition, the cartoons of "MeFiTu and Jara" They are a good example to explain that we should not go "all against fire." Fire has always been and will be in our landscape. Fire must know how to work it, and not demonize it, as it has been doing so far.
On the other hand, another important channel and in which you can always access it to know the philosophy of the Foundation, is the Decalogue. This document describes the lines on which it acts. In fact, the Decalogue can be signed, with which you assume and share the responsibility of the criteria argued therein, is in itself a very ingenious way of making yourself known; He shares knowledge while inviting him to participate in his activity through the firm.
I use Twitter to be able to inform me of the activities carried out by the Foundation. However, I am aware of the dark sides of the USSR and its threatening "Fake News." I hope that the Foundation continues to work as it has been until now, so as not to allow the immediacy to come to misinform, nor to echo false information.
"The fire has to know how to work it, and not demonize it, as it has been doing until now"
How does the mission of the Foundation contribute to your profession?
Me brings knowledge in an area that interests me a lot, which is the fire ecology. As a Rural Agent of Catalonia, I am in charge of preventing and investigating forest fires, and as a volunteer firefighter, which I am also, I am in charge of putting out the fires. This double vision allows me to appreciate the evolution of current ecology, and the importance of learning about this area within the Corps of Rural Agents in order to improve skills.
The PCF helps me in this process of continuous learning, thanks to your research and experience. The Foundation contributes to not being a worker without judgment, but a professional who makes informed decisions.
What do you expect from the Foundation in five years?
I get a major recognition by public institutions. That research, landscape and forest ecology come together more and work together.
This would help to understand what it means to have disorganized, unmanaged and depopulated forests. Likewise, I hope that the Foundation in the near future will be able to establish synergies with politicians from the bottom up, and once the foundations are well established, that politicians will apply these measures.
Do you want to add something else about the PCF?
The Foundation is formed by a group of young people eager to work, with vocation and spirit to change things. They are enthusiastic to resume a way of working in the territory and achieve a landscape that burns less, and this will allow us to establish prevention criteria at the cost of reinvesting the profits of the rural environment.
You have to get the bioecology forestry and retake the old offices that are in danger of extinction, such as grazing or extensive livestock. Finding the values of the people who are dedicated to the primary sector. That future will allow us to offer a decent heritage of the landscape to our descendants.
