Structured Approaches for Forest fire Emergencies in Resilient Societies

SAFERS is a new innovative project co-financed by the EU's Horizon 2020 program for 3 years with a budget of 3,3 million euros. The project will develop a complex Emergency Management System (Emergency Management System - EMS) to support the entire emergency management cycle: an information system for that integrates data and Earth observation services offered by the Copernicus program from the EU, data from collaborative sources (in English crowdsourcing data) from social networks and other applications used by both citizens and emergency personnel, and real-time data provided by sensors to detect smoke or fires.
An advanced algorithm based on Artificial Intelligence will be used to generate risk maps and early warnings in the preparation phase, estimate the extent of the forest fire and its spread based on the meteorological and soil conditions predicted in the response phase, and calculate the impacts of an extinguished fire in terms of economic losses and monitor soil recovery in the post-event phase. The project will collect all these data and services into an open platform for forest fire management and will validate the services in 4 pilot projects with field demonstrations in Italy, France, Spain and Greece.
